Western Nations Should Act Decisively On Two Fronts Against Russia

The CEO of Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, stated that the country's economic outlook is weak. According to him, "we see significant signs of an economic slowdown."

The reason for Russia's economic woes is Vladimir Putin's war of aggression in Ukraine, which has resulted in enormous amounts of money being spent on military expenses. Additionally, foreign trade has become significantly more difficult due to sanctions imposed by Western countries.

According to the CEO, the weakening of Russia's economy is particularly evident in the construction sector. Inflation is also at a high level, leading the country’s central bank to raise the interest rate to as much as 21%.

Moreover, it is expected to continue raising interest rates later this year. However, the Sberbank CEO emphasized the need for caution in these adjustments to allow for the possibility of boosting economic growth.

It remains to be seen, however, whether—and at what point—Russia's economic troubles will hinder Putin's war efforts in Ukraine. Therefore, it is crucial for Western nations to act decisively on two fronts in this situation.

The first is to more resolutely support Ukraine's military efforts, and the second is to accelerate measures that contribute to Russia's economic decline. Hopefully, this approach is understood by the leaders of the world's largest economies—namely the USA, Germany, the UK, and France.

This is particularly important right now, as Russia's own economic developments are providing an opportunity to significantly impact its war-making capabilities. This, in turn, could pave the way for peace, not only for Ukrainians but also for the hundreds of thousands of Russians who have lost family members to the war's grinding machinery.

Cousin is not just a delicacy, but also a hindrance to social success

As my esteemed reader surely knows, it is customary in many cultures to marry young virgins to male relatives. Such inbreeding causes genetic issues because children inherit the same gene forms from both parents, and each individual carries recessive genes in their genetic makeup, which, when inherited from both parents, can cause more or less serious problems.

In addition to the genetic effects, it has been claimed that consanguineous marriages also have negative implications for societal development. To test this hypothesis, a recent study was published, examining the differences among U.S. states in their attitudes towards cousin marriages.

The study analyzed data from millions of individuals from the 18th to the 20th century and found that cousins who married each other were more likely to reside in rural areas and engage in fewer wage-earning jobs compared to others. On the other hand, bans on cousin marriages resulted in people moving from rural to urban areas, leading to better-paying occupations.

The researchers' findings also indicated that these changes were attributed to the social and cultural impacts of diminished family ties rather than genetic factors. Simultaneously, people's support for their relatives decreased, resulting in a higher prevalence of institutional care for the elderly relatives.

Overall, the study I have discussed here supports the notion that immigration policies should aim to break the tradition of consanguineous marriages within immigrant groups where it is common. This issue should not be seen as a matter of equality or human rights but rather as a natural part of eliminating harmful cultural practices - such as female genital mutilation or blood feuds - in order to promote the social integration and individual success of immigrants.

Vakartšuk of the Okean Elzy: Finnish history inspires Ukrainians

Okean Elzy is the most popular Ukrainian rock band. And they are right now giving a tour of concerts in Northern Europe. The leader of the band, Svjatoslav Vakartšuk, was interviewed by Helsingin Sanomat, the biggest newspaper in Finland.

During the interview he told, that he went to register himself as a volunteer immediately after Russia attacked his home country. He was, however, asked to continue as a musician to give Ukrainians inspiration to stand the war. And that he has done.

The band has decided to give 400 tickets of their Helsinki concerts to Ukrainian refugees in Finland. And part of the profit from the two concerts will be directed to the victims of the war.

In his interview Vakartšuk told that "you may not know how much your history inspires us. You showed that a small country can resist a much bigger neighbor. That is a common theme of discussions in Ukraine. Thanks for that."

I am pleased to hear that the sacrifices given by my grandparent´s generation are still used for something good. Both of my own grandfathers were injured during the second world war, but stayed alive. After saying that, I want to emphasize that I certainly hope Ukraine as an independent country will do the same!

And to become another example of a small country surviving an unfair attack by its much bigger neighbor. And indeed: right now the situation seems to be excellent! Slava Ukraini!
