The Overlooked Factor Behind Finland’s Falling PISA Scores

The PISA results published yesterday, which measure schoolchildren’s academic performance, showed that the performance level of Finnish, and many other European, schoolchildren had declined since the previous assessment. The reasons for this have been discussed in the pages of one Finnish media outlet after another, and at least the obvious impact of social media on children’s ability to concentrate has not been downplayed.

However, one factor that has quite evidently contributed to the decline in our schoolchildren’s performance has received remarkably little attention. Namely, the indirect effect of poorly performing immigrant children and young people on other pupils.

Of course, it is impossible to say anything with certainty about this without proper research, but even common sense suggests that the disruption these pupils are known to cause, and the special attention they require from teachers—which comes at the expense of the time available for teaching other schoolchildren—would seem to be plausible candidates for explaining, for example, the [surprising decline] in the learning outcomes of children from socioeconomically advantaged families.

* * *

I was particularly surprised when Professor Mari-Pauliina Vainikainen, who commented on the issue on  television —and was wearing a rather striking floral decoration on her head—explicitly denied that immigration has an impact on learning outcomes (at around the 15-minute mark in this recording). She justified this by saying that the gap in academic performance between immigrant young people and native Finnish young people had narrowed since the previous assessment.

Her reasoning is, of course, factually correct in itself, but her conclusion seemed odd given that the impact of immigration is known to have significantly worsened the conditions for maintaining order and concentration in school classrooms. Even more peculiar was the realization that I could not easily find a Finnish source to link to documenting this phenomenon, which is familiar to the parents of children in all kinds of ethnically diverse classrooms.

In any case, it is clear that if pupils from the majority population have to study in a more disruptive environment than in previous years, this will affect their learning. The same applies if, because of the additional attention required by immigrant children, they receive less time and instruction from their teachers than they did in the past.

It would therefore be good if researchers and funding could also be found for studying these factors. Above all, we should develop a pedagogical solution that would eliminate these problems from Finnish school classrooms.

Sex and Gender Identity in Skiing

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has decided to test the gender of women participating in competitions. According to its president, Johan Eliasch, “this policy is the cornerstone of our commitment to protect women’s sport, and we are convinced that there is only one fair and transparent way to do that: by relying on science and biological facts.”

I’m eagerly waiting to see whether this statement sparks protests among so-called woke people, who are often heard claiming that humans have a vast number of different genders. Eliasch’s comment, however, seems to rest on the assumption that there are only two: male and female, determined by genes.

On the other hand—in my understanding—the overwhelming majority of people do recognize that while there may be numerous gender identities experienced by individuals, sex is ultimately a fact tied to reproduction. Those who are capable of fathering children are men, and those who are capable of giving birth are women. Everyone else represents exceptions to this rule, not distinct sexes.

As for the issue itself, it should simply be said that the FIS decision is exactly right for women’s sports, since hardly any reasonable spectator would want to see the same kind of farce on the ski tracks as was witnessed in the boxing rings at the Paris Olympics, where male violence against women was legalized and broadcast live on TV.

Greta Thunberg and Renaz Ebrahimi in Search of Publicity

Swedish Greta Thunberg and her friends suffered a terrible setback just as they were about to once again set off to be turned back from Gaza. The gods of the winds, it seems, stirred up a strong gale over the Mediterranean, forcing the brave adventurers to return to their port of departure.

Thunberg and her companions have nevertheless decided to continue their journey once the wind dies down, setting sail for the much-suffering Gaza. Their intention there is to break the illegal blockade of Gaza and deliver essential aid to its civilians.

It remains to be seen how Greta’s brave warriors will fare: will they succeed in forcing Israel to do what neither Hamas nor Iran has achieved through violence, and what not even the UN itself managed through diplomacy? What is certain, in any case, is that today’s storm and their eventual arrival will provide them with very welcome publicity, which will surely flatter their egos.

* * *

One of the participants on this expedition is Renaz Ebrahimi, a Finnish public figure. Her most successful performance to date took place during a Finnish TV broadcast (at 13:57), where she acted with Oscar-worthy rage after astronomer and science writer Esko Valtaoja unfortunately said: “For example, now this notorious N-word. It’s quite a different matter if it’s used by some member of parliament who talks – pardon me – about jumping little neekeri men, than if it’s Pippi Longstocking’s father, who happens to be the neekeri king.”

By way of background for my international readers: as recently as the 1990s, the Finnish word neekeri simply meant a dark-skinned person, without carrying the same connotation as the American word nigger. Of course, today that association has been forcibly imported from America, but even now, the older generation often uses the term without any negative intent.

So, it remains to be seen whether Renaz Ebrahimi will succeed in gaining as much publicity from her trip to Gaza as she did after the TV broadcast I linked above. What is already certain, however, is that she, Greta, and the other brave travelers will be diverted away from the coast of Gaza—most likely to an Israeli port, as happened on the previous occasion.

Eco-Fascist Blackmail: Threats of Sabotage Loom Over the World Ski Championships

Norwegian eco-fascists are planning to disrupt the so-called "king’s race" of the Trondheim World Championships, the 50-kilometer ski race. The threat is serious, as these so-called activists have previously attempted to sabotage ski competitions.

The group behind the threat, Folk mot fossilmakta, has stated that they will cause disturbances unless their two conditions are met. These conditions are as follows:

  1. All visible logos and advertisements from fossil fuel companies must be removed.
  2. A short informational video about the treaty to stop the spread of fossil fuels must be played on large screens throughout the entire World Championships.

In other words, this is not just a demand—Folk mot fossilmakta has made a "Godfather-style offer you can’t refuse." They are blackmailing the organizers of the World Championships, threatening to destroy them—or in this case, the competition that both the organizers and the world’s best skiers have painstakingly and expensively prepared for.

It remains to be seen how the organizers of the World Championships will respond to this extortion. The easiest option for them would, of course, be to comply with the demands and fulfill the wishes of the eco-fascists. However, the problem with such an approach is that giving in to this kind of mafia-like behavior would grant it significant visibility—leading to even more similar threats in various events for increasingly bizarre reasons in the future.

* * *

The organizers’ headaches are further compounded by the fact that the "king’s race" in cross-country skiing is set to take place on a long 8.3-kilometer course, making it nearly impossible to guard completely. This remains true even though the eco-fascists will most likely try to maximize their visibility by staging their attack near TV cameras.

This is because, in mass start races, cameras are positioned to capture the entire course, meaning that sabotage can be carried out virtually anywhere. And the situation is further complicated by the fact that the 50-kilometer races are held twice in Trondheim—once for men and once for women.

It remains to be seen how the International Ski Federation and the Norwegian organizers will respond to the eco-fascist mafia’s threat. Will they give in to the blackmail to ensure that the competition doesn’t turn into a disaster? Or will they trust that law enforcement—ultimately responsible for maintaining order in the kingdom—will prevent Folk mot fossilmakta from disrupting the event?

* * *

In the long run, if the eco-fascists succeed in their sabotage or if their demands are met, it would encourage similar demands and disruptions in the future. And not just in sports competitions, but in all kinds of events where visibility can be gained by disturbing large crowds or causing other forms of damage.

That’s why it would be ideal if Norwegian society ensured that the blackmailers had no opportunity to interpret the events during the World Championships to their advantage. In other words: 1. Prevent sabotage, 2. Ensure that any attempted disruption receives no more media coverage than a brief mention. 3. Above all, make sure that such actions are not portrayed in a positive light.

In short, it should be made clear that a so-called "offer you can’t refuse" has no place in modern times—and that resorting to such tactics will not advance any cause.

Iranian Missile Attack was Followed by Humorous Flowers

Iran launched around 200 missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted. However, some missiles managed to get through the defense in central and southern Israel, resulting in the death of a Palestinian in the West Bank. Additionally, some material damage occurred as missiles hit empty homes and cars. According to American sources, minor damage was also inflicted on one of Israel’s military bases.

Against this backdrop, I found it somewhat incredible to read the writings of Muslims on social media. Or what do you, dear reader, think of these flowers of humor?

First, according to an account with a female figure (most probably not a woman): "Iranian state TV just ran this", followed by a flamboyant video clearly made using artificial intelligence or some other tricks.

Second, according to Iran’s military: "90% of our weapon systems successfully struck their intended targets".

Third, according to the Lebanon Times: "Pakistan’s Shaheen III missiles can strike Israel in a few minutes. This is the right time—Pakistan must provide its missiles to Iran, Yemen, Lebanon, and Palestine. Long live Iran."

My interpretation is that Iranian state TV is spreading unwieldy false information, the Iranian military is simply lying, and the Lebanon Times wants to subject Pakistan to Israel’s counterattacks. However, an ordinary Iranian has no chance of being factually informed.

I tell you, during the Winter War, Finns were not adequately informed about the situation on the front, and when Finland agreed to peace, including the loss of large areas, ordinary citizens were furious. Having learned from this, the events of the Continuation War were reported honestly. This made life much easier for both politicians and the people after the war.

The difference between today’s Iran and 1940s Finland is that the former is a dictatorial theocracy that doesn’t care about its people's lives and health. In contrast, the latter was a true democracy serving its inhabitants.

Mentally Elementary-School-Aged Were Attacked, But Will Iran Come to Their Aid?

The brave journalist from the Finnish broadcasting company Yleisradio, Antti Kuronen—whom I hold in high regard—was harassed last night during a live broadcast, first by a group of young Lebanese and then shortly afterward by members of Hezbollah. The incident was, of course, unfortunate, but also quite telling.

This is because the confrontation illustrated more clearly than a thousand words what kind of people we are dealing with. First, the young adults who disrupted the broadcast behaved like kindergarteners—or at most, elementary school children—by trying to get their faces, and one particularly eager individual even their voice, onto the TV broadcast.

A moment later, after Kuronen mentioned the magic word "Hezbollah," the older Hamas terrorists attempted to steal Kuronen’s camera equipment—and managed to damage it somewhat in the process. In doing so, they demonstrated their opposition to impartial reporting from Lebanon, at a time when the entire Muslim world is spewing Hezbollah propaganda through every possible medium.

It remains to be seen how this group will fare against the attack launched by Israel. Will the soldiers of the Jewish state easily push Hezbollah further away from the border, or will the Shiite fighters—who are obviously mentally on the level of children—be able to mount effective resistance? And will the Israeli army succeed in its objective of stopping rocket fire from Lebanon into northern Israel?

The reaction of other states to Israel’s attack also remains to be seen. It’s clear that those stuck on an elementary school level are hoping for help from at least Iran.

One could also place bets on whether the ruling mullahs will dare to jeopardize their own position to help their terrorist allies. And if they do, will Israel take advantage of the situation to push Iran’s nuclear program into the history books?

What’s the Issue With Russians?

Almost all Finns nowadays know that recognizing facts is the beginning of wisdom. In Russia, however, there seems to be some confusion about this.

A Finnish afternoon newspaper Iltalehti reported on this in an article where a film director warned that Russia could lose the war it started in Ukraine. According to the director, "we should always start from the premise that we can lose... we can lose if such blunders continue."

This was not about inciting defeatism, which he made clear by stating, "this is not about discouragement. It is not about spreading fear... It is simply a clear understanding of the price that we and our country will have to pay."

The director also wondered, "on TV, we always show Ukrainians who do not want to fight... But now we see that they are fighting well. And they are very motivated. Why are we deceiving ourselves?"

It is well known that in Russia, the "truth" is always what the country’s dictator—whether it be a tsar, the chairman of the politburo, or Putin—sees fit. And this time, the price has been paid by the soldiers sent to the war in Ukraine, especially the approximately half a million people who have lost their lives or health as a result of their country's leader's madness.

From what I have written above, the inevitable question arises as to why this is the case. That is, what flaw in the Russian people or their culture prevents our eastern neighbors from building a society where people could live well. After all, we are talking about the world's richest country in terms of natural resources, with a population that is also reasonably well-educated.

Swedish TV Did Not Learn Anything From the Riots in the UK

According to Swedish TV, crimes committed by young people are causing headaches for authorities in Sweden and Denmark. According to the Danish Minister of Justice, the most important thing is to "prevent the exploitation of Swedish child soldiers in crimes on the Danish side."

This is understandable, as Danish police have arrested several Swedes in recent days. Two Swedes in their twenties were arrested on the Swedish side of the Öresund Bridge because they were suspected of involvement in an explosion in Copenhagen.

A 17-year-old Swedish teenager was also imprisoned on suspicion of attempted murder in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen. The victim of the gun crime was 18 years old. Additionally, 16- and 17-year-old Swedish youths have been imprisoned on suspicion of involvement in two recent shootings that occurred in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, and in Kolding.

As a result of all this, Swedish and Danish police have intensified their cooperation. It is not impossible that border controls between the two countries may be reintroduced, despite having been abolished on Nordic borders decades ago.

Based on all this, it seems that something has significantly changed in Sweden, in particular. However, large-scale immigration from developing countries was not mentioned in the Swedish TV news, so I won’t mention it either, even though, like everyone else in the Nordic countries, I know that it is almost certainly the underlying cause of the events we are now witnessing.

It seems that nothing has been learned in Sweden from the violence in Northern England, where - according to the media at least - disinformation related to the stabber's ethnic-religious identity played a significant role in triggering the events. This false information spread because the authorities failed to disclose immediately the truth about the actual background of the Rwandan-born murderer in the island nation.

Finland Will Thrive with Any US President, Trump Survived the Assassination Attempt

The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, was interviewed on the Fox channel, which aligns with the US Republicans. However, he did not comment on the relative merits of the presidential candidates but stated that regardless of who leads the United States, Finland will get along with him.

Stubb also noted with satisfaction that an increasing number of NATO member countries have invested the agreed two percent of their GDP in defense. He gave credit for this to the former US president who brought up the issue at the time.

Instead of addressing specific issues, he mentioned that the political discourse in the US has become toxic, and he does not want the free world to emulate it. This can also be interpreted as a comment on Finland's domestic political debate, which also has become unnecessarily polarized in recent years.

He also suggested that the US and Finland could deepen their defense cooperation, for example, in the field of icebreakers, as 80 percent of the world's icebreakers are designed and 60 percent are manufactured in Finland. However, it remains to be seen whether the Pentagon will take up this offer.

Overall, I was quite skeptical of Alexander Stubb's ability to serve as president after he was elected. Therefore, I am very pleased to see that, in my view, he has performed his duties very well thus far, as also evidenced by the interview seen on Fox.

One can only hope that this continues in the future. And that the US also gets a political leader in the upcoming elections who exceeds the expectations of the voters.

* * *

At the same time, the presidential race in the United States is intensifying. The latest development was an assassination attempt on a candidate, resulting in the death of one likely Donald Trump voter, as well as the shooter. Additionally, at least two people were seriously injured.

However, it is likely that Trump's support among voters has rather increased than decreased as a result of the assassination attempt, given that Trump himself sustained a minor injury. This is partly because, during the heated campaign, some Democrats have carelessly expressed wishes for violence against Trump - a fact his supporters are not shy to highlight.

The incident is also serious in terms of freedom of speech. The central question is whether last night's shooting would have occurred without the Democrats' violent rhetoric. Or were those statements ultimately irrelevant, with the shooter's motive emerging from "ordinary" political discourse, which is, in any case, extremely polarized in the United States.

We will never get a definitive answer to these questions, as the shooter is not here to tell. And this will not change, no matter how much the background of the incident is analyzed by any group of political commentators.
